A 3D model can make an online course look impressive. But appearance is not the measure of effective learning. The real question is whether it helps someone understand a subject, make a better decision or prepare for a practical task.


For maritime organisations and training providers, this distinction matters. Creating a 3D model takes time and specialist knowledge. It should solve a genuine learning problem, not simply add movement to a screen.


What 3D works well in education


Some technical subjects are difficult to explain through words or flat images alone. Learners may need to understand the shape of an object, how components fit together, what happens inside a system or how something changes during an operation.


A well-designed 3D model allows learners to turn an object, view it from different angles and focus on individual parts. It can reveal areas that would normally be hidden and show relationships that are difficult to see in a photograph or diagram.


Research suggests that 3D models and animation can improve interest, motivation and understanding, particularly when a subject involves movement, space or an abstract process. However, the results are not always consistent. Too much movement or information can distract learners, while an oversimplified model can create a false sense of understanding.


The quality of the design still matters.


Start with the learning problem: What does the learner need to understand or do?


Before creating a model, the first question should be: what does the learner need to understand or do?


A photograph, diagram or video may be the right choice for a simple explanation. A 3D model becomes valuable when learners need to explore an object, understand its arrangement or practise making sense of a situation that is difficult, expensive or unsafe to reproduce.


Technology should follow the learning need, not lead it.


Give the interaction a purpose


Allowing someone to rotate a model is not, by itself, a learning activity. Learners need a reason to explore it.


They might be asked to identify a component, follow the route through a system, predict what will happen next or explain why a particular action is required. Labels, questions, guidance and feedback can then help them check and build their understanding.

The model should form part of a clear learning journey, supported by explanation, assessment and opportunities to discuss the subject with tutors or colleagues.


Applying 3D to maritime learning


In maritime training, 3D can help learners explore shipboard equipment, machinery, cargo spaces and operational environments before encountering them in practice. It can support preparation before joining a vessel and allow important subjects to be revisited at sea or ashore.


It does not replace practical experience, instruction or assessment. Nor does interacting with a model prove competence. It can, however, provide a clearer foundation for later practice and workplace application.
