  • Q: How Long does this course last?
    A: You’ll have up to four years to complete all the units and graded assessments.
  • Q: How quickly can students complete each set?
    A: The three sets/options can be completed as quickly as the students can complete the work, then arrange and pass the assessments.
  • Q: Can I work while studying?
    A: Absolutely. The blended learning model allows you to study at your own pace, making it perfect for working professionals.
  • Q: Are there any prerequisites
    A: Candidates must have completed and passed the HNC.
  • Q: Are there any online classes that we can attend?
    A: There are no planned online classes. It is self-directed learning, but tutor support is readily available where students have specific questions to be answered.
  • Q: Do you need the sea time as an OOW before you can enrol?
    A: No, the only requirement is to have passed the HNC.
  • Q: Can you accrue seatime as you complete the diploma?
    A: Yes, you can study while you accrue sea time.
  • Q: Does the graded unit exam need to be sat at Tyneside college?
    A: Presently exams must be sat at South Tyneside College only.
  • Q: Do we have to appear for internal exams after completing each set?
    A: Students need to arrange appropriate times to attend South Shields Marine School to sit the exams.
  • Q: Can the SQA written exams be sat at another college?
    A: Students can sit the SQA Chief Mates written exams at colleges that permit them to do so.
  • Q: Why are there two choices of option 1 or option 2?
    A: Candidates should complete the Core modules first, then Option 2 and Option 3. It is only the order for Option 2 or 3 that can be chosen. NB! Option 3 will be live in May 2025.
  • Q: Are all of the modules critical to the underpinning knowledge?
    A: Yes, they are all required for the underpinning knowledge but can be sat in stages.
  • Q: Is it possible that we complete all the sets/options first and then appear for internal exams all at once?
    A: You must complete the assessments in each set/option before moving onto the next set option, ie you will need to complete first three modules before moving on to the next three.
  • Q: Do we need to complete the mandatory short STCW courses (Medicare, NAEST (M) and HELM (M)) before enrolling on this AD Program, or before appearing for SQA written exams?
    A: The short courses can be undertaken during or after completion of the AD or the SQA Chief Mate Written exams. However, the courses need to be undertaken prior to applying for the Notice of Eligibility for the MCA Chief Mates oral exam.
  • Q: Is there any minimum time bound to complete this course or can I do it on my pace to complete it?
    A: There is no predetermined minimum time. However, candidates must ensure that the required underpinning knowledge has been attained to obtain the Education and Training letter required for a Notice of Eligibility. Remember, the Chief Mates written examinations require a thorough understanding for candidates to be able to answer challenging questions which require critical analysis.
